Self Storage Units: Your safe, secure and convenient space

Self Storage units are enclosed spaces hired out to people or companies for storage of items that are not needed on a daily basis. In a self storage unit people who are storing personal items will store such thing as clothing, furniture, out of season clothes. A self storage unit can also be used by a business for storing records or inventory respectively.

In the UK about 50,000 such self storage unit facilities exist. Some Self storage units have truck rentals available to their clients. Self storage units vary in size depending on what client is needs are for storing their items. Popular unit sizes include (measurements are width x depth in feet) 10 x 5 ,10x10, 10x20,15x20 and 20x20. These are made using corrugated metal and have no windows. A wire mesh or chain-link is used and is a more secure ceiling than a suspended ceiling. The door of the self storage unit is usually roll-up metal door, about the same size as a one-car garage door but some facilities do have self storage units as large as a two car garage.

Some self storage units have  controlled access gates. Some self storage unit facilities will hire  security guards, install surveillance cameras, individual unit door alarms and some means of electronic gate access such as a keypad on which you will need to enter a security code to be allowed to enter. A few might even have a thumb print or hand scanners to ensure that access is granted only to those who are renting a self storage unit.

Rural and suburban areas have self storage units in multiple single-story buildings with mostly drive-up units having natural ventilation, but which are not climate-controlled.
Some suburban areas now have climate-controlled interior units, but these are not as popular since the need for self storage units is less in suburban areas.

In the cities, self storage units that are in multi-story buildings using elevators or freight lifts, to aid in movement of goods to the upper floors. Within the floors rolling carts or moving dollies are used. Being mostly interior units they are climate controlled. Due to the high demand warehouses or grocery stores have been converted into self storage units. Some self storage units are also contained within larger premises that has numerous floors, which also house other companies, office premises etc.

Self storage unit customers are not allowed to store any hazardous, toxic, and perishable material. Mostly personal items, furniture, motorcycles, overstocked retail wares, are contained in these units. Customers are forbidden from sleeping or living in the self storage units.

Self Storage units’ tenants are the only ones who have access to their units but in the event of a non payment of rent the unit can be accessed by the Self storage facility operators and customer's goods are then sold at auction. The storage facility lien rights are codified in most areas, meaning the customer is still responsible for any rent and fees due if the auction does not clear their balance on their self storage unit.
